WE ARE THE MIGHTY SKIPPERS!
Our Class Mission Statement:
"To participate in a learning environment which fosters teamwork, creativity, and life-long learning skills."
Current Studies:
READING:
- Readers workshop gives us a chance to focus on comprehension skills and to understand the author's purpose and focus.
- Armadillo from Amarillo - Cause & Effect and making Inferences.
- Weekly focus - main idea & detail - We are reading books about specific Ancient Civilizations for our final cummulative project. Students will produce a 5 paragraph essay and an artifact from the Civilization to add to our classroom museum.
LANGUAGE ARTS:
-
During our 90 minute Literacy Block we will be working out of our Harcourt Trophies Basal readers, using literacy stations, engaging in guided reading and Silent Sustained Reading and Reader's Theatre. It is a lot to cover, but I have set up a rotation schedule with a "Can Do/Must Do" Menu to help guide us in our learning.
WRITING:
-
We will be setting up our Writer's Workshop procedures and learning skills to become more effective writers. Students will use content area studies as well as creative writing prompts to develop their ideas from the pre-writing through the publishing stage.
MATH:
-
The final quarter will be focused on solidifying skills, specifically multiplication and fractions.
SOCIAL STUDIES:
-
Our last unit of study will be ancient civilizations. Your child will be doing a research project on the civilation that holds their highest interest. This will start in May.
SCIENCE:
-
We will be finishing up our Earth Sciences study with a trip to Lake Louisa State Park, a visit to see the new Disney EARTH movie, and an installation of our classroom butterfly garden!
